It adds more strategy to choosing your fighters in a way that acts like a simple layer that's deep, rather than a mess that takes time to understand. It's a very simple addition that's really welcome. Four team members and no strikers, one team member and three strikers, and everything in between. You can assign your team of four, which was previously limited to being three characters and a striker, to whatever position you want. The big gimmick for this KOF is the striker edit. Not only that, but you can have the biggest team ever assembled in a King Of Fighters game to date. But anyway, this time, we've got the biggest roster of fighters ever: 40 characters. I don't mean to harp on this, are both still quality games, but it always seemed silly to me that a fighting game sequel should decide to lower the amount of playable characters. If I can credit 2001 on one thing, it's that it finally got enough fighters to top 98. Just shows why SNK was known for quality back then.

Still, it's neat to see SNK add these special features that take time and effort to craft and program instead of shoving out a quick and easy port. The Dreamcast doesn't have rumble built into the controller, so you'll have to buy a jump pack in order for this to mean anything to you. And finally, rumble support was added to all of the games on the Dreamcast. There's the option to autosave, which is something I've been dying for since the Neo Geo CD games. It's a neat addition for SNK fans, and gives more incentive to play around with other characters.Īnother neat little addition included is a gallery mode with unlockable pictures, though I personally never unlocked any. For instance if you set Shingo as your striker, you can choose between Shingo, or Kyoko, a female cosplaying as main character Kyo. Depending on what characters you choose, you can alternate between your normal, chosen striker character, or a special one that's exclusively a striker. The big feature of The King Of Fighters 2000 is the special strikers. We haven't topped 98's roster yet, but it's a step in the right direction. The game itself introduces us to some more fighters, bringing the total up to 35. My favorite has to be the aquarium stage, where the water moves so fluidly it's getting harder to believe it was done on hardware made in 1990. Not a lot is going on in these backgrounds, but they're just so rich and beautiful it's hard not to stare. It's more detailed, but not very crowded. It brings its own new style to the table that's lighter than 99, but looks more detailed.

The King Of Fighters 2000's load times aren't nearly as long as it's Neo Geo CD siblings, and everything looks crisp without looking like the system is killing itself to do so. Right away, the leap from Neo Geo CD to Dreamcast is apparent. It's just me giving my impressions of the games. And again, this won't be super technical, as I am not a technical fighting game person. This is covering the Japanese only releases of the next three games in the franchise: 2000, 2001, and 2002. I won't look at those two since we already covered what we needed to. I should note that 98 and 99 also had enhanced Dreamcast ports, with things like 3D backgrounds and Neo Geo Pocket Color link support.

You can consider this the "Part 3" of my look at the King Of Fighters series, covering the Dreamcast era. There's even only three new games here, just like how I divided my look at the Neo Geo CD games into Part 1 (94-96) and Part 2 (97-99). Picking up right where the Neo Geo CD left off, the Dreamcast ports of The King Of Fighters games feature the same arcade quality as the Neo Geo AES, with a remastered soundtrack and art galleries at the cost of some loading times.

The King Of Fighters games on the Neo Geo CD featured the same arcade quality as a Neo Geo AES, with a remastered soundtrack and art galleries at the cost of some loading time. It's almost like this was destined to happen.
